Most recently, rainbows have become an LGBT pride symbol, but they have a rich symbolic history that you can apply to your tattoo. In Norse mythology, the Tremulous Way, the bridge between earth and Asgard, is a rainbow. The bridge is a connection between Earth and another mystical realm. If you feel you have a strong connection to the supernatural, your tattoo could symbolize the same connection. Similarly, in Christian theology, the story of Noah’s ark ends with God showing Noah a rainbow as a promise that the earth would never flood again. A rainbow tattoo could symbolize faith in that promise, or promises in general. In Celtic tradition, rainbows have pots of gold at the end of them. A tattoo of this could symbolize wealth, luck, or prosperity. And as mentioned, if you choose, a rainbow can also symbolize LGBT pride and solidarity. Usually there are seven colors in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Rainbows are formed by reflection and refraction of light spectrums in water droplets, which is why we usually see rainbows after rain. A rainbow tattoo could symbolize a belief that bad things have to happen for good to come, or a reminder to look on the bright side of life.
