The Star of David (also known as the Shield of David) is a generally recognized symbol of Jewish identity and Judaism. It is named after the King David of ancient Israel and began being used in the Middle Ages. In 1948, Israel made the Star of David its symbol and put it on its national flag. In a popular folk tale, it is said that the Star of David is modeled after the shield of the young Israelite warrior David, who would later become King David. In order to save metal, the shield was not made of metal but of leather spanned across the simplest metal frame that would hold the round shield in two interlocking triangles. However, its exact origin is unknown.

A Star of David tattoo would most likely be found on a Jewish person or someone who aspires to ideal in Judaism. Interesting enough there is an urban legend that a person with a tattoo cannot participate in Jewish rites, including a Jewish burial. It is true, Jewish law does not permit the intention defacement of the human body and some imagine this to include tattoos as well. However, this does not mean that tattoo wearers cannot participate in Jewish ceremonies and they most certainly can be buried in Jewish traditional. Denying someone that would be a violation of the Jewish principle Kavod Ha-Meitgiving honor to the dead.
