Angels, winged beings independent from physical life, are found in many religions. In the major religions, angels are messengers of God. (The word angel comes from the Greek word "aggelos", which means messenger. They can also act as warriors or guardians, carrying out God's will in the affairs of man. Angel tattoos are often accompanied by the symbols associated with them, like trumpets, harps, and swords. The tattoos usually include halos over the angel's head to symbolize their divinity. Modern day angels can be depicted as young adult of either sex, but during the Renaissance period they were depicted as cherubs or chubby cheeked youngsters.

Angel tattoos can be symbols of the wearer's religious faith or spirituality. They can also be thought of as protection or a guardian angel to watch over the wearer's life. These angels are often found tattooed on the wearers shoulder. In memorial tattoos, angels are usually the centerpiece of the entire tattoo.
